Answers to frequently asked questions about particle size analyzers

Mar. 09, 2023

1) What is particle size analyzer used for?

Particle size analyzer is used to test particle size distribution of powders, emulsion, suspension, and spraying particles, It can play a good role in guiding the company's product development and product quality control.

Particle size is the main performance index of powder materials, such as the hydration reaction of cement, the adhesion and covering rate of paint, the capacity of lithium battery materials, the decomposition speed of drugs, the filtration efficiency of filters, the magnetic permeability and correction of magnetic materials. Resistivity, effectiveness and residue of pesticides, air and environmental pollution, etc. are all related to particle size, so particle size distribution testing has become an important basic work for the production, application and research of powder materials.

2) How do you analyze particle size?

Common particle size testing methods are laser scattering method (millimeter, micron, nanometer), dynamic light scattering method (nano), dynamic and static microscopic image hair (micron, particle size and shape), gravity and centrifugal sedimentation method (micron/nano ), Coulter resistance method (micron), electron microscope method (micron, nanometer), ultrasonic method (micron), air permeability method (micron average particle size) and sieving method (greater than 38 microns), etc. The most commonly used methods are laser light scattering, dynamic light scattering and microscopic imaging.

3) What are the 2 types of particle size analysis?

According to which dispersion medium the sample is used to test, it can be divided into two types, wet dispersion and dry dispersion.

4) What is DLS particle size analyzer?

A complete statement should be the dynamic light scattering principle particle size analyzer, which is used to test the particle size distribution of nanomaterials.

Dynamic Light Scattering, also known as Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, is a conventional nanoparticle size characterization method with the advantages of accuracy, speed, and good repeatability. With the update of instruments and the development of data processing technology, the current dynamic light scattering instrument not only has the function of measuring particle size, but also has the ability to measure Zeta potential and molecular weight of macromolecules.

The measurement principle of dynamic light scattering is that nanoparticles in suspension, emulsion droplets and molecules, under the collision of Brownian motion of liquid molecules, are also moving similar to molecular Brownian motion. When a laser beam is irradiated on these dynamic particles and molecules, these moving particles will cause the intensity of scattered light to fluctuate, and the fluctuation frequency depends on the moving speed of the particles, and the moving speed depends on the particle size (because the smaller the particle size, The faster it moves under the impact of molecular Brownian motion), so the speed of particle Brownian motion will be obtained by analyzing the fluctuation of scattered light intensity, and then the particle size and particle size distribution of nanometers can be obtained by using the Stokes-Einstein equation.

5) How does a particle size analyzer work?

First of all, choose the appropriate type of particle size analyzer according to the characteristics of the sample. If the sample is in the form of powder and does not react with liquid, then you can choose dry or wet particle size analyzer. If the sample reacts with liquid, choose dry particle size analyzer.

After choosing a particle size analyzer, it is necessary to choose to pretreat the sample or directly test the sample according to the characteristics of the sample.

The test method of wet particle size analyzer is as follows:

1. click Fill in water, remove air bubbles, turn on ultrasonic and circulation functions, and test the background.

2. When the background is good, add samples for testing.

3. After the energy spectrum is stable, click Save Data.

4. Drainage, point cleaning function.

5. Select the data to get the average value and print the test report.

The test method of dry particle size analyzer is as follows:

1. Turn on the dust collector, supply air, and click on the background test.

2. Click Feed, add samples for testing,

3. After the energy spectrum is stable, click Save Data.

4. Click the reset button to end the test and print the test report.

6) What does a particle size analyzer do?

Through the particle size analyzer, we can get the particle size distribution and some basic parameters, such as D50, D90, D[3,2], D[4,3] and so on. These parameters can play a better role in product development and quality control.
